ASAM sent letters of support for the Removing Barriers to Medicaid and CHIP Addiction Treatment Act and the Medicaid Coverage for Addiction Recovery Treatment Act. These bills would work to repeal Medicaid Institutions for the Mental Diseases (IMD) exclusion for mental health and substance use disorder residential treatment facilities.

Today, President Donald J. Trump announced his Initiative to Stop Opioids Abuse and Reduce Drug Supply and Demand to address the opioid crisis in the United States. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) has long called for a comprehensive federal plan to address our current crisis of opioid addiction and overdose, and is pleased the Administration is now devoting the time and attention necessary to turn the tide on the opioid epidemic. Drug overdoses have surpassed traffic fatalities as the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. for some time, and concerted and meaningful action to reduce overdose deaths is long overdue.

The Opioid Workforce Act of 2019 (H.R. 3414), introduced by Representatives Brad Schneider (D-IL), Susan Brooks (R-IN), Ann Kuster (D-NH), and Elise Stefanik (R-NY), would help address the national shortage of addiction physician specialists by increasing the number of resident physician positions available in hospitals that either have or are developing residency programs in addiction psychiatry or addiction medicine (or pain medicine).
