ASAM sent letters of support for the Removing Barriers to Medicaid and CHIP Addiction Treatment Act and the Medicaid Coverage for Addiction Recovery Treatment Act. These bills would work to repeal Medicaid Institutions for the Mental Diseases (IMD) exclusion for mental health and substance use disorder residential treatment facilities.

On May 16, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced its approval Lucemyra, the first non-opioid treatment for management of opioid withdrawal symptoms.
Lucemyra (lofexidine hydrochloride) reduces the release of norepinephrine and can be used to lessen the severity of withdrawal symptoms that may occur after the discontinuation of opioid use.

Today the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) submitted a letter to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce as it considers legislation to address the opioid misuse, addiction, and overdose epidemic. The letter, submitted to Chairman Greg Walden (R-OR) and Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-NJ), urges the Committee to approve bills that expand the provision of evidence-based treatment, strengthen America’s addiction treatment infrastructure, and bolster the nation’s addiction treatment workforce.

ASAM commended Senator Elizabeth Warren, Representatives Elijah Cummings, and all original co-sponsors for introducing the CARE Act of 2019. Modeled on successful, bipartisan legislation passed in 1990 to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the CARE Act would authorize $100 billion in federal funding over the next decade to states, local governments, and other organizations and institutions to support substance use disorder treatment programs, improve training for addiction treatment professionals in communities across the US, and expand access to treatments that meet national standards and are proven to save lives.

On April 3, the Board of Directors of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) approved a new policy statement: Public Policy Statement on the Ethical Use of Drug Testing in the Practice of Addiction Medicine. This Policy Statement includes recommendations on the clinical use of drug testing, appropriateness of presumptive testing, and the responsibilities of clinicians when testing for drugs.
