ASAM’s new Advanced Addiction Education Badge offers physicians and advanced practice providers formal recognition for completing 41 hours of advanced education across foundational and substance-specific topics. Designed for those who may not be eligible for board certification, this digital badge highlights your commitment to evidence-based addiction care and lifelong learning. Launching in February 2026, the ASAM Advanced Addiction Education Badge will empower you to showcase your expertise to employers, colleagues, and patients alike.

Courses

Foundational

• Review Course in Addiction Medicine (15 hours)
• Pain & Addiction Essentials (6 hours)
• Motivational Interviewing Essentials (4 hours)

Substance Specific

• Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder Course (4 hours)
• Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder Course (8 hours)*
• Treatment of Stimulant Use Disorder Course (2 hours)
• Treatment of Tobacco Use Disorder Course (2 hours)

* Learners who have taken ASAM’s 8-hour Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder (TOUD) course (previously known as our waiver course) can upload their past certificate to take ASAM’s Advanced Buprenorphine instead. If you have not previously completed the 8-hour TOUD course, you are not eligible to take the Advanced Buprenorphine Course instead of the TOUD course.

Other Requirements

• Participation in the badge is for ASAM members only.
• Learners must achieve 75% or higher on the 160 CE questions.
• Learners have 2 years to complete all 7 courses once they register for the Addiction Education Badge.
• Any of these courses completed in the past 3 years can be counted towards the course requirements and are eligible to receive a discount. Learners who have completed past courses can email ASAM at education@asam.org to receive a discount towards enrollment in the education badge.
