ASAM Board of Directors Leadership Opportunities
ASAM's continued impact depends on the leadership and engagement of its members. Serving on the ASAM Board of Directors provides an opportunity to help guide the Society's strategic direction, strengthen addiction medicine education and advocacy, and represent the voices of clinicians across the field.
We encourage members who are passionate about advancing addiction medicine and supporting the ASAM community to consider applying to run for a Board leadership position.

Who Should Apply
ASAM welcomes applications from members committed to advancing the field and contributing to the leadership of the Society. We strongly encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, practice settings, and lived experiences to apply, as we seek to elect a Board that reflects the full breadth of the addiction medicine community.
Stepping forward to run for the Board (regardless of outcome) is an act of service - an opportunity to help shape the future of ASAM and the field of addiction medicine through your leadership, insight, and commitment.
Candidates should:
- Be ASAM voting members in good standing
- Demonstrate leadership experience within ASAM or other professional organizations
- Bring a collaborative mindset and commitment to ASAM's mission
- Demonstrate commitment to ASAM's mission through annual personal financial support and engagement in fundraising efforts
*Voting members may hold elected offices except Retired and Provisional members.
Board Leadership Positions
President-Elect
Role Overview
The president-elect serves as a member of ASAM's executive leadership and chairs the Public Policy Coordinating Council. At the completion of the term, the president-elect succeeds to the office of President.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must:
- Have served on the ASAM Board of Directors as a voting or ex-officio member within the four years prior to the 2027 Annual Meeting
- Hold current certification in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry through one of the following:
- American Board of Preventive Medicine (Addiction Medicine)
- American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Addiction Psychiatry)
- American Osteopathic Association (Addiction Medicine)
- International Society of Addiction Medicine (Addiction Medicine)
- Or hold lifetime certification from the American Society of Addiction Medicine or the American Board of Addiction Medicine
Preferred Experience and Attributes
Ideal candidates:
- Are well acquainted with the organization, its history, mission, current role, finances, programs and services, constituency and staff; understands the external forces that affect the organization.
- Possess the ability to inspire a shared vision for the mission of the organization.
- Are willing to participate and be active identifying, cultivating and soliciting donors.
- Have demonstrated energy, commitment and support for Society's mission.
Vice President
Role Overview
The Vice President supports the President and the Board of Directors and assumes the duties of the President in the absence or disability of the President. The Vice President performs additional duties as assigned by the President.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must:
- Have served on the ASAM Board of Directors as a voting or ex-officio member within the four years prior to the 2027 Annual Meeting
- Hold current certification in Addiction Medicine or Addiction Psychiatry through one of the following:
- American Board of Preventive Medicine (Addiction Medicine)
- American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Addiction Psychiatry)
- American Osteopathic Association (Addiction Medicine)
- International Society of Addiction Medicine (Addiction Medicine)
- Or hold lifetime certification from the American Society of Addiction Medicine or the American Board of Addiction Medicine

Secretary
Role Overview
The Secretary chairs the Constitution and Bylaws Council, maintains records of the proceedings of the Society and the Board of Directors, preserves official documents and correspondence, and advises the Board on parliamentary procedure and governance policies.

Candidates must:
- Have served on the ASAM Board of Directors as a voting or ex-officio member within the four years prior to the 2027 Annual Meeting
Preferred Experience and Attributes
Ideal candidates:
- Have experience with governance, bylaws, or policy development
- Demonstrate strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Are knowledgeable in parliamentary procedure and board governance practices
- Are comfortable advising on governance and policy matters
- Willing to devote the necessary time to fulfill responsibilities of the Office
Treasurer
Role Overview
The Treasurer chairs the Finance Council and provides leadership in the financial stewardship of the Society. The Treasurer reports on the financial condition of ASAM and supports financial planning and oversight.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must:
- Nominees must currently serve or have served on the Board as voting or ex officio members within the four years prior to the 2027 Annual Meeting. An exception may be made in the case of a nominee for the office of Treasurer, who may be a nominee from the general membership, having qualifications for the position, and having been active on the Finance Council within the past four years.
Preferred Experience and Attributes
Ideal candidates:
- Experience interpreting and communicating the contents of and implications of the financial data
- Has demonstrated energy, commitment and support for the Society’s mission
- Must be willing to devote the necessary time to fulfill responsibilities of the Office
Director-at-Large
Role Overview
Directors-at-Large serve as Society-wide representatives on the Board of Directors and contribute to strategic discussions, governance, and organizational decision-making.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates must:
- Be an active voting member for at least three years
- Demonstrates a commitment to ASAM’s mission through service on a committee, task force, or other significate national or state endeavor
Note: ASAM's bylaws require that at least one Director-at-Large be a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
Preferred Experience and Attributes
Ideal candidates:
- Demonstrate leadership experience and engagement with ASAM initiatives
- Bring a broad, strategic perspective to Board discussions
- Represent diverse experiences, practice settings, and viewpoints within addiction medicine
- Show a strong commitment to ASAM’s mission and long-term goals
- Must be willing to devote the necessary time to fulfill responsibilities of the Office

Terms of Service
- Officers serve two-year terms.
- Directors-at-Large serve four-year-terms.

The 2026 ASAM Board Call for Applications is now open. Eligible members are invited to apply for leadership positions that help shape the future of the Society and advance ASAM's mission.
Applications must be submitted no later than Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. We encourage interested candidates to review the position descriptions, eligibility requirements, and election timeline before beginning the application.
To submit an application, log in to your ASAM Member Portal, select Forms, and then choose Browse Online Forms. From there, select the application for the Board position you wish to pursue and complete all required questions and supporting documentation before submitting your application.
Your application will include:
- A statement of interest outlining your motivation for Board service
- A summary of your leadership and governance experience
- A description of your prior involvement with ASAM and contributions to the field of addiction medicine
- Responses to additional application questions related to strategic leadership, service commitment, and fiduciary responsibilities
