Most recently, I helped to develop the updated standards in the 4th Edition of The ASAM Criteria that encourage all addiction treatment programs to be co-occurring capable, at minimum. Among other organizations urging Congress address the glaring shortage of physicians trained to treat patients with addiction, ASAM signed a letter supporting the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Workforce Act of 2024, bipartisan legislation that provides Medicare support for an additional 1,000 new graduate medical education (GME) positions that would be implemented in hospitals accredited residency programs in addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, or pain medicine, and their prerequisite programs, including hospitals that are establishing such programs.
