    This article highlights findings from the 2022 NSDUH showing that many Americans in recovery from substance use continue to use alcohol or other drugs, challenging the abstinence-only model that dominates U.S. treatment. The study found no significant differences in functioning between abstinent and nonabstinent individuals in recovery, underscoring the need to broaden definitions of recovery and incorporate harm reduction approaches. The authors advocate for more inclusive, flexible treatment models that align with individuals’ goals, reduce stigma, and improve service engagement and outcomes.
