ASAM Partners with Several EMR Systems to Integrate ASAM CONTINUUM Software

Rockville, MD (January 16, 2023) – The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) recently secured partnerships with several EMR systems to integrate its CONTINUUM software, which serves as the “decision engine” for The ASAM Criteria®.

Developed after more than 20 years of research, ASAM CONTINUUM is an electronic assessment tool that allows clinicians, counselors, and other staff to leverage a computerized clinical decision support system (CDSS) to assess individuals with addictive substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions.

ASAM CONTINUUM guides interviewers through a whole-person comprehensive assessment aligned with the six dimensions of The ASAM Criteria to determine service planning, transfer recommendations, and produce a level of care recommendation for the least intensive, but safe and appropriate setting.

ClinicTracker has already completed its integration of ASAM CONTINUUM, the only product authorized by ASAM to produce an accurate ASAM Criteria dimensional assessment and level of care recommendation. NaphCare, AdvancedMd, HiMS, Alleva, Lightning Step, and Netalytics are in the process of integrating the software. Several other EMR systems have signed an intent to integrate ASAM CONTINUUM, including Civitas Health Services, Inc., Kepro, Willigent, Kipu and Qualifacts. ASAM values the commitment and collaboration of ASAM CONTINUUM partnerships to advance addiction medicine health technology initiatives.

After three months of using ASAM CONTINUUM, clinicians reported 30-percent better patient retention rates, increased patient engagement, and two to three times better multidimensional outcomes.

With ASAM CONTINUUM, clinicians can easily do the following:

  • Conduct a comprehensive biopsychosocial patient risk and needs assessment created from The ASAM Criteria
  • Accurately determine the most applicable ASAM Criteria level of care using ASAM CONTINUUM’s decision logic
  • Obtain ASI Severity Subscale Composite Scores: Medical, Alcohol, Drug, Psychological, Employment, Family/Social, and Legal
  • Complete CIWA and CINA assessments for withdrawal are built directly into the assessment
  • Operates within the foundation of numerous existing EHR systems

The ASAM Criteria and ASAM CONTINUUM are companion text and application. The ASAM Criteria text provides background and guidance for the proper use of ASAM CONTINUUM, and ASAM CONTINUUM enables a comprehensive, standardized evaluation. ASAM CONTINUUM standardizes data collection and provides real-time insights within a given system and across the nation. Data gathered from ASAM CONTINUUM assessments help inform policy decisions and updates to decision rules within The ASAM Criteria text. Using The ASAM Criteria text and ASAM CONTINUUM together enhances effective assessment, placement, and treatment planning for adults.
