ASAM Strongly Supports the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act of 2019

On May 16, ASAM, along with 49 other organizations including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, sent a letter to Representative Frank Pallone (D-NJ), the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, as well as Representative Donna Shalala (D-FL) expressing support for the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act of 2019 (H.R. 2339).

The bill would prohibit flavored tobacco products that appeal to youth, including e-cigarettes, flavored cigars, and menthol cigarettes. The bill would also prohibit sale of tobacco products to individuals under the age of 21 and sale of tobacco products online. Finally, the bill would extend the marketing restrictions enforced by the FDA regarding cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products to all tobacco products. By taking decisive action and engaging the tobacco epidemic on multiple fronts, the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act is a positive step towards turning the corner on this health crisis.
