ASAM Applauds Provision of the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act That Would Ban Menthol Cigarettes
On October 16, ASAM, along with 45 other organizations including the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, sent a letter to Representatives Frank Pallone and Greg Walden in support of the provision of the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act (H.R. 2339) that would prohibit menthol cigarettes.
The letter noted that due to their ability to cool and numb the throat, menthol cigarettes are particularly attractive to youth. Additionally, the letter observed that menthol cigarettes are disproportionately consumed by the African American community, in large part due to a decades-long marketing campaign by the tobacco industry. The menthol cigarette prohibition is a key piece of the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act's mission to combat the youth tobacco epidemic.
