On May 16th, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, along with nearly 100 stakeholder organizations, sent a letter to Speaker McCarthy, Majority Leader Schumer, Minority Leader Jeffries, Minority Leader McConnell, and the Chairs and Ranking Members of the House of Representatives Energy & Commerce and Judiciary Committees, and of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, to express their strong support of the Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act of 2023 ("the M-OTAA of 2023," H.R. 1359, S. 644).

On May 10th, the Alabama Society of Addiction Medicine (ALSAM) sent a letter in support of HB433/SB239 to members of the House Committee on Health. In light of the removal of the federal “X-waiver,” this legislation would repeal a previous state law requiring the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners to adopt rules governing the prescribing and use of buprenorphine to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) in nonresidential settings.

On May 10th, national organizations, including the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and Faces and Voices of Recovery, held a briefing for the 118th Congress, and strongly encouraged a national response to the deadly substance use and addiction crisis that has left no American community untouched.

On April 17th, ASAM joined 125 other organization in endorsing the Reentry Act, which would allow incarcerated individuals to receive medical services supported by Medicaid thirty days prior to the individual's release and is currently prohibited by the Medicaid Inmate Exclusion Policy (MIEP).

On March 29th, ASAM provided comments to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). recommending it include actions in the 2024 biennial national drug control strategy that call for the decoupling criminal penalties and personal drug use possession, implemented as part of a carefully designed set of public health and legal reforms that include strategic, social investments to strengthen American communities and improve lives.
