  • The U.S. House of Representatives Must Rise to the Moment: Cutting Methadone’s Red Tape Means Saving Lives

    Jun 20, 2023, 10:05 by Molly McGrath
This week, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health will take steps to advance a range of legislation that aims to strengthen the nation’s approach to the addiction and overdose crisis—and, ultimately, save lives. However, we are deeply disappointed that the Subcommittee has chosen to leave the Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act (MOTAA) (H.R. 1359) off its docket for this week’s legislative hearing. MOTAA is a bipartisan bill that would create a small, but necessary, adjustment in a longstanding closed system of clinics. It would accomplish this by empowering expert addiction specialist physicians — not just clinicians working in an opioid treatment program (OTP) — to prescribe methadone to treat opioid use disorder (OUD). The bill has received broad support from national organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Pharmacists Association.

The landscape of addiction treatment faces new challenges, as evidenced during the Covid pandemic. With dual-diagnoses on the rise, promising new treatment modalities are needed more than ever.

  • A Helpful Explanation to the Modernizing Opioid Treatment Access Act (H.R. 1359 and S. 644) Released by National Organizations

    Jun 5, 2023, 12:53 by Molly McGrath
Under the MOTAA, non-OTP clinicians and pharmacies would remain subject to a variety of federal (and state) laws and regulations that guard against diversion of controlled medications. Expert clinical discretion would determine the frequency of counseling and drug testing in patient care, subject to any applicable state regulations. M-OTAA would not change the longstanding federal requirement that all controlled medication prescriptions by authorized prescribers must be issued for a legitimate medical purpose in the usual course of professional practice.
