MASAM Supports Proposed Legislation Adding Methadone to the PMP
On May 22, the Massachusetts Society of Addiction Medicine (MASAM) sent a letter of support for H 2200 to state lawmakers. This legislation would allow individuals receiving methadone treatment from opioid treatment programs (OTPs) to be included in the prescription monitoring program (PMP).
In the letter, MASAM noted that PMPs are an important tool to protect patients and ensure proper prescribing of controlled substances. However, addiction medications dispensed by OTPs are not currently included in the state’s PMP. MASAM argued that H 2200 would take a step in the right direction by allowing patients receiving methadone to be included in the PMP. Notably, this legislation aligns with ASAM policy supporting the inclusion of methadone in PMPs. MASAM also highlighted the expertise of its board members who work in OTPs in support the legislation. The letter characterized H 2200 as key legislation to promote public health and protect patients in Massachusetts.
