NVSAM Comments on State’s Implementation of Medicaid Work Requirements
On April 30, the Nevada Society of Addiction Medicine (NVSAM) responded to a call for public comments from Nevada Medicaid on their proposed implementation of Medicaid work requirements and exemptions. Specifically, NVSAM called for broader definitions of medical frailty and substance use disorder (SUD) to minimize costly disruptions in coverage and protect individuals with SUD.
In the letter, NVSAM noted that Medicaid is the largest third-party payer for SUD services in the country and is essential in the provision of treatment for SUD. NVSAM articulated that maintaining program integrity and protecting access to treatment for people with SUD can be achieved. NVSAM argued that the proposed definition for the SUD exemption is too narrow. NVSAM offered changes to improve the definition and ensure that negative impacts are minimized with people with SUD.
