Biography

Nicholas Athanasiou, MD, MBA, DFASAM is an addiction psychiatrist with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA. As a faculty member of the UCLA – Olive View Psychiatry Residency Program, his academic focus is to enhance education in the field of addiction medicine for psychiatric residents and trainees. His clinical focus is on treating individuals with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders in an outpatient setting.

After several years as a Senior Editor, Dr. Athanasiou is the current Editor-in-Chief of the ASAM Weekly, Chair of the ASAM Publications Council, and member of the ASAM Board of Directors. He also serves on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology’s Addiction Psychiatry Examination Writing Committee.

A graduate of the UC Irvine School of Medicine’s combined MD/MBA program, Dr. Athanasiou went on to complete his residency training in Psychiatry at the UCLA – San Fernando Valley Psychiatry Training Program and subsequently completed fellowship training in Addiction Psychiatry at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He has been an Associate Director for two Addiction Psychiatry fellowship programs and has published and presented on the topic of improving education in addiction medicine.
