ASAM's Suggestions to Fix Burdensome Regulations Impeding Addiction Care

In a letter to US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Russell Vought, ASAM offered two deregulatory ideas to improve addiction treatment access. The following suggestions also align with President Trump's executive orders to streamline unduly burdensome regulations:

  1. Waive burdensome requirements that limit access to injectable buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD); and
  2. Reduce a criminal legal barrier to prescribing controlled addiction medications for legitimate medical purposes.

Amidst the ongoing addiction and overdose crisis, and the recent renewal of the public health emergency declaration of the opioid crisis, new ideas to expand access to addiction treatment are urgently needed.
