MISAM Supports Expanded Reimbursement for SUD Treatment Services

On July 5th, the Michigan Society of Addiction Medicine (MISAM) sent a letter to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) in support of proposed policies 2310-OBSUT and 2323-Hospital. Together, these policies would allow expanded reimbursement for SUD treatment provided in office-based, emergency department, and inpatient settings.
In the letter, MISAM emphasized the need to expand reimbursement for a full continuum of SUD treatment services. Specifically, MISAM noted that addiction specialist physicians and clinicians regularly experience issues related to reimbursement. Indeed, inadequate reimbursement and other challenges relating to insurance coverage are often cited as a significant barrier restricting greater access to SUD treatment. Further, MISAM cited the importance of coverage for treatment services provided in emergency department and inpatient settings. These settings provide a valuable entry point for treatment induction and linkages to future treatment services in the community. In sum, MISAM praised MDHHS’s proposed policies as an important step forward to expand access to evidence-based SUD treatment for patients in Michigan.
