Coalition Endorses Bipartisan Legislation to Reduce the Nation's Physician Shortage

On May 8th, nearly 80 organizations part of the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Advocacy Coalition supported the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023 in a letter to U.S. Representatives Terri Sewell and Brian Fitzpatrick. The legislation is crucial to expanding the physician workforce and ensuring patients' access to quality care, as an estimated shortage of up to 124,000 primary care and specialty physicians in America is expected by 2034. This legislation would gradually raise the number of Medicare-supported GME positions by 2,000 for seven years, and a share such positions would be targeted to hospitals with diverse needs, including those in rural areas and that serve patients from health professional shortage areas (HPSAs).
