ASAM Submits Comments to CMS on Medicare Physician Fee Schedule

On September 6, ASAM submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on the proposed 2023 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS). CMS listed a number of proposals, including revisions to opioid treatment program (OTP) services, a proposal to establish physician payment for the management of chronic pain, and a request for information on intensive outpatient (IOP) services.

ASAM’S comments commended CMS for their efforts to expand access to treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) and expressed support for many of the proposals. ASAM stressed support for plans aimed at expanding access to OTPs, a proposal to cover services in mobile methadone units, and encouraged CMS to expand coverage of IOP services. ASAM’s comments also urged CMS to refine its proposal to cover the management of chronic pain services and offered a number of other recommendations to expand access to treatment for SUD.
