MISAM Supports Proposal to Expand Opioid Health Homes

On August 15th, the Michigan Society of Addiction Medicine (MISAM) sent comments to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in support of their proposed expansion of opioid health homes (OHH). Recently, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced their intention to seek a state plan amendment (SPA) to expand OHH into more regions of the state.

In the letter, MISAM emphasized the important role that OHH play in any comprehensive strategy to address the addiction and overdose epidemic. OHH provide treatment and long-term support services to individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). Further, MISAM noted that OHH provide critical services to Medicaid recipients who may experience difficulty receiving care otherwise. In its supportive statement, MISAM also encouraged the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to work with stakeholders to expand OHH beyond the scope of the proposed SPA. Specifically, MISAM stressed the need for OHH to be expanded in the future to provide integrated treatment for all substance use disorders (SUD), in addition to OUD.
