Editorial Comment:  T.K.Li, MD, d. 18 November 2018

Although not a member of ASAM, Dr. Ting-Kai Li deserves notice here of his passing.  A past Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, T.K. Li demonstrated qualities of humility and persistence in scientific inquiry that led to his emulation by many.  He was perhaps most highly regarded for his mentorship of younger scientists, apropos given his area of greatest interest: alcohol use in adolescents, a population defined by both its potential and its need for mentorship.  Dr. Li was to many in research what the sponsor is in AA.  The analogy is supported by remembering that a sponsor acts without expectation of personal reward.
