Newly Updated Parity Resource Guide Helps Ensure Coverage for Addiction Treatments

ASAM is excited to share the second edition of the Parity Resource Guide: “Simplifying the Appeals Process: Strategies for Winning Disputes with Your Health Plan.” The guide was released by the Kennedy Forum and the Parity Implementation Coalition, in which ASAM serves as a member organization.  

The primary purpose of this resource guide is to educate and inform patients, providers and other advocates of the action steps available to them to ensure that they receive the same type of insurance coverage for mental health and substance use disorder treatments as they receive for physical treatment services. The new free resource can be downloaded at www.parityispersonal.org and www.thekennedyforum.org.

The guide offers an accessible overview of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (known as "MHPAEA"), explains the appeals process for disputing a denial of health insurance coverage and offers guidance on filing parity appeals as well as other types of appeals.
