In Memoriam: Barry Stimmel

ASAM mourns the passing of Barry Stimmel, MD, FASAM, former Dean for Graduate Medical Education, Ombudsperson, and Dean Emeritus for Medical Education at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Stimmel was a dedicated ASAM leader and a pioneer in the field of addiction medicine. He was actively involved in ASAM, serving as the founding editor of ASAM's previous scientific journal, Journal of Addictive Diseases. He became an  in 1996 and served on the committees that helped to create the American Board of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Stimmel passed away on November 24; an obituary is available through The New York Times. ASAM will recognize Dr. Stimmel with a moment of silence during its annual business meeting in Austin, Texas this coming April.
