ASAM Announces 2017 ASAM Annual Fellowship Award
Simeon Kimmel, MD, of Boston University to receive honor and award July 28 in Dallas, Texas
Rockville, MD, July 26, 2017 – ASAM is proud to announce the winner of the ASAM Annual Fellowship Award Grant for 2017. This $40,000 award was made possible through the generous support of Merck. ASAM awards and scholarships help to expand ASAM educational opportunities for Fellows who are hoping to learn more about treatment, prevention, research, and addiction medicine in general.
These awards help ASAM further its mission and also continues to extend the importance of addiction medicine in the scope of research and treatment for patients with addiction.
ASAM’s Annual Fellowship Award supports a Fellow by offering a stipend to an early career research project. This year, five Fellows from prestigious universities submitted their proposals for a chance to earn this distinguished award. The five Fellows hailed from Yale University, Boston University, New York University, University of Wisconsin, and the University of Buffalo.
Based on scientific value, relevance of the topic, and the dedication and qualifications of the candidate, the Nomination & Awards Council deliberated and voted to award Simeon Kimmel, MD, of Boston University the 2017 ASAM Annual Fellowship Award. Dr. Kimmel’s research is titled “Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder in Injection Drug Associated Endocarditis,” and is proposed to be conducted from July 2017 to June 2018. Dr. Kimmel is a Fellow of both infectious disease and addiction medicine. His research will explore the effect of medications used to treat opioid use disorder (OUD) on opioid-related mortality, all-cause mortality, acute care events, and re-hospitalization in a population of patients with injection drug associated infections, including endocarditis, specifically focusing on patients with HIV and hepatitis C. His career development as a clinician-investigator centered on addressing the infectious complications of substance use disorders will be greatly influenced by this important project.
Dr. Kimmel will receive honors, commemorated with a plaque, at the 2017 ASAM Review Course on July 28th in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Kimmel will also be encouraged to submit his findings for an upcoming ASAM Annual Conference so he may further share his research with ASAM members and the broader addiction medicine community.
