ASAM's Dr. Soper to Join CDC Director Tom Frieden at AMA Opioid Epidemic Event

On Monday, November 16, ASAM's representative to the AMA Task Force to Reduce Opioid Abuse Dr. Richard Soper will take the stage at the AMA Interim Meeting in Atlanta to discuss stigma related to addiction. Dr. Soper will be joined on the dais by Dr. Patrice Harris, Chair-elect of the AMA Board of Trustees and Chair of the Task Force; Dr. Tom Frieden, Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; Dr. Sharon Meieran, an emergency psychiatric services physician; and Dr. Daniel Carr, professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, president-elect, American Academy of Pain Medicine.

The panelists will discuss strategies that physicians and medical societies can take to combat the current opioid epidemic our country is facing. Dr. Soper's remarks will specifically address how stigma affects a patient's willingness to seek care and health care providers' perceptions of patients with addiction.
