Position Title:  Scientific Consultant

Status: Variable, up to half-time

Position Summary:

This Scientific Consultant position will collaborate with ASAM’s Quality & Science department to create, test, and improve clinical assessment and education products to support implementation of The ASAM Criteria Fourth Edition. The ideal candidate will have experience with clinical algorithms and knowledge of the addiction treatment field.


This position will report to the Senior Director of Science and Technology and will work with an established team of PhD- and master’s-level scientists, clinicians, technology experts, project managers and support staff. The Consultant will assist with the development of clinical assessment and education products for implementation of The ASAM Criteria, Fourth Edition; support quality improvement of assessment measures for Level of Care placement and treatment planning; and assist with preparation of clinical cases for Criteria education and assessment products. 


The hours of this part-time (10-20 hours per week) position will be defined on a flex-schedule, with some availability to meet with team members during East Coast (Rockville, MD) business hours, Monday-Friday. 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the Senior Director of Science and Technology to develop and refine products for implementation of The ASAM Criteria 4th edition Dimensional Admission Criteria;

  • Contribute to quality improvement of assessment measures for Level of Care placement and treatment planning, with a focus on measurement-based care;

  • Help prepare and update clinical cases for ASAM Criteria education products.

Works closely with:

  • ASAM Senior Director of Science and Technology

  • ASAM staff, Science and Technology team

  • ASAM staff, Quality and Science department


Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. (in scientific or health-related field) preferred

  • Expertise in addiction treatment and/or behavioral health fields 

  • Experience in clinical algorithms and/or behavioral health assessment strongly preferred

  • Experience in implementation of health information technology tools desired
