Richard Saitz Named the Senior Editor, Journal of Addiction Medicine

CHEVY CHASE, MD, OCTOBER 14, 2014 – Richard Saitz, MD, MPH, FASAM, hasbeen named the Senior Editor of the Journal of Addiction Medicine, the official journal of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). He will take this leadership position January 1, 2015, when the current Senior Editor, renowned researcher Dr. George Koob, steps down to focus on his appointment as Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Saitz will join current journal Co-Editors Drs. Shannon Miller, Martha Wunsch and Frank Vocci.  

Dr. Saitz is a general internist and primary care physician, Chair and Professor of Community Health Sciences at Boston University (BU) School of Public Health, and Professor of Medicine at BU School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and by the American Board Addiction Medicine.

“As a General Medicine Internist with leadership and expertise in Addiction Medicine, Dr. Saitz will tactfully position ASAM’s journal amidst the Affordable Care Act, the Patient Centered Medical Home, Addiction Parity, and the new national recognition of the importance of placing addiction medicine central to primary care,” said Dr. Lori D. Karan, Treasurer and Publications Council Chair, ASAM, who lead the recruitment.

Dr. Saitz has received numerous awards for his research contributions to the field of addiction medicine, including a RSA Distinguished Researcher Award from the Research Society on Alcoholism, the R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Scientist Award from ASAM, and The W. Anderson Spickard, Jr. Excellence in Mentorship Award from the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse. His studies, supported by Federal agencies and foundations have focused on integrating care for addictions into general health settings, including identification and brief interventions in primary care. He is also a highly recognized practicing physician at Boston Medical Center, having been elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America®.

Dr. Saitz is author of over 160 peer-reviewed publications and has published more than 30 scientific articles in the last year alone. His editorial background in the addiction field includes having served as an active board member of the International Society of Addiction Journal Editors, as Editor-in-Chief of Alcohol, Other Drugs and Health: Current Evidence, Evidence-Based Medicine and Addiction Science & Clinical Practice and as an editorial board member on numerous addiction and other medical journals. He has also served as a leading editor of The ASAM Principles of Addiction Medicine and as a Section Editor of UpToDate®.

The current editors, Drs. Koob, Miller, Wunsch and Vocci commented that the selection of Dr. Saitz to be Senior Editor brings renewed focus to the journal’s mission of promoting excellence in addiction research as well as to support addiction medicine as a mainstream medical specialty.
