ASAM Recognized at National Press Club Event

On the afternoon of April 17, Gil Kerlikowske, Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), delivered remarks at the National Press Club about drug policy reform and the Administration’s 21st century approach to drug policy.  Director Kerlikowske was joined by three leading organizations – American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) and Young People in Recovery.  Representing ASAM was Board of Directors member, Kelly Clark, MD, FASAM.

Director Kerlikowske recognized ASAM as an organization that represents a critical piece of the Administration’s approach to drug policy reform.  Director Kerlikowske praised ASAM for its role in developing REMS education to assure safe prescribing of LA/ER opioids in accordance with the FDA blueprint.  “This program will make sure prescribers understand addiction, proper opioid prescribing, and pain management.  Physicians play an important role in our efforts to reform drug policy – by first and foremost making sure that society recognizes drug abuse as the public health issue it is,” commented Director Kerlikowske.

“It was an honor for ASAM to be recognized at this event," said Dr. Clark. “ASAM greatly values ONDCP’s support and partnership in addressing drug policy reform.”
