Public Policy Statement on Transplantation

**Note: This historical policy statement is available as part of ASAM's Policy Archives, but it is no longer considered current ASAM policy. Please contact ASAM's advocacy staff at for questions related to ASAM's position on this topic.

The diagnosis of alcoholism per se should not preclude consideration of liver transplant as a mode of treatment. Furthermore, ASAM is absolutely opposed to the setting up of any arbitrary length of abstinence as a requirement before any person with a diagnosis of alcoholism be considered an appropriate candidate for organ transplantation. As with other medical conditions, decisions should be made on a case by case basis on the basis of relevant medical criteria.
