Position Title: Scientific Consultant

Status: Variable, up to half-time

Position Summary:

This position will collaborate with other team colleagues in analyzing ASAM’s CONTINUUM data repository of individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs), conducting quality improvement reviews, proposing updates and new features, and generating reports for providers, treatment systems, and government and payer systems. ASAM is a medical professional society of over 6,000 members with a total staff of 40+ and a $10M annual operating budget. It is an energetic, fast-paced organization with multi-faceted opportunities in addiction medicine. Its evidence-based ASAM Criteria and related tools have steadily gained widespread adoption for improving addiction patient assessment, treatment and reimbursement.

The ASAM Criteria are implemented through the ASAM CONTINUUM: a comprehensive, standardized biopsychosocial intake and follow-up assessment. The ASAM CONTINUUM has established the ASAM Criteria as the nation’s most widely used set of ACA-complaint SUD medical necessity criteria. (For information, see: https://www.asam.org/asam-criteria; asamCONTINUUM.org). It consists of a computer-guided structured interview and clinical decision engine. The ASAM CONTINUUM provides clinicians with a computer-guided, structured interview process that organizes treatment priorities and recommends the least intensive, safe, effective treatment setting. It is evidence-based and continually undergoing quality improvement. The database is approaching 100,000 assessment records from multiple states and criminal justice systems. Derivative tools include the brief CO-Triage interviewer-administered provisional referral tool and the patient self-administered S-Triage (also known as the Addiction Treatment Needs Assessment, on Google Recover Together: https://recovertogether.withgoogle.com/treatment/).
