Biography - Gerald Marti, MD, PhD

MartiGerald-wwwGerald Marti, MD, PhD is a physician scientist who spent the last 30+ years in the US Public Health Service at the NIH and FDA studying hematological malignancy. He received his MD and PhD from Northwestern University Medical and Graduate School in 1977 followed by an internship and residency in Medicine at Northwestern University completed in 1980. He retired from the Public Health Service in July 2010 and in Jan 2011 began workiing part-time as a Medical Officer for the Office of In Vitro Diagnostics and Radiological Health (OIR), CDRH, FDA. In 2012, Dr Marti was recipient of the ICCS Wallace H. Coulter Award in recognition of his many contributions to the field of clinical flow cytometry.

He is also a member of ASAM. As a member of the Maryland ASAM chapter, he has primarily focused his efforts in the area of continuing medical education. Currently, as past-president of the Maryland ASAM chapter, he team teaches the FDA mandated risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS) for the use of extended release and long acting opioids. Dr. Marti went to Ghana for14 days in May 2014 and met with Ghanaian professionals regarding addiction treatment and rehabilitation. Dr. Marti is on the Recovery Africa Advisory Council and is also board member for the Arise and Flourish Foundation. This foundation’s goal is to prevent adolescent drug and alcohol addiction. He represented ASAM at the Senate press conference (June 24, 2015) introduction of the Jason Simcakoski Memorial Act. He also met with Susan Awad, ASAM Director, Advocacy and Government Relations and FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf on August 25, 2016 for an FDA Mental Health/Psychiatry Listening Session. Dr Marti is also a member of the Hagerstown,MD Fatal Drug and Alcohol Overdose Review Team.
