Position Title: Manager or Senior Manager, Quality and Science

Reports To: Director, Quality and Science

Status: Exempt

Position Summary:

ASAM is a medical professional society representing more than 6,500 members with 50+ staff and a $10M annual operating budget. It is an energetic, fast-paced organization with multi-faceted opportunities in the area of addiction medicine.

This position will report to the Director of Quality Improvement to manage the ASAM’s publication portfolio. The Manager engages ASAM leadership, society members and partners to make accessible in the best possible format knowledge that drives addiction practice. The Manager works closely to support ASAM’s Publications Council in strategic planning surrounding the development and dissemination of addiction content through textbooks, newsletters and the Journal of Addiction Medicine, a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The manager executes this strategic plan by engaging committees of editors and authors, by collaborating with key external partners and ASAM staff.


  • Work with ASAM’s Publication’s Council to update and implement the scholarly publishing 3-year strategy.
  • Provide project management, ASAM leadership, authors and editors, in the development of high-quality, scientific content, from conceptualization, through manuscript development, to publishing and fulfillment.
  • Provide project management and assistance with the creation and implement of a strategic plan to increase the visibility of department products and promote ASAM’s publications.
  • Oversee, and assist with, the development of Q&S budget and tracking of revenues and expenditures. Track monthly and quarterly sales of society publications and monitor net revenue goals.
  • Oversee and administer society scholarly partnerships, including contractual agreements with publishing partners and managed care organizations.
  • Oversee and administer copyright permissions contracts for ASAM publications, including The ASAM Criteria.
  • Oversee recruitment and evaluation of editors and authors for ASAM publications.
  • Other duties as they arise and assigned

Travel requirements:

  • Small amount of travel to provide on-site management required for successful operation of the editorial team and promotion of ASAM publications.

Education & Experience:

  • Three - five years of project management experience required
  • Experience working with committees required
  • Publishing, manuscript development and peer review processes knowledge required
  • Association experience preferred and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Non-profit and grant management experience preferred
  • Experience with contract negotiations is a plus

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to efficiently handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail
  • Ability to interact effectively, efficiently, and professionally with individuals at all levels of the organization and with ASAM members
  • Ability to motivate authors/editors and engage volunteers in a strategic mission
  • Excellent written, organizational, communication and customer service skills are required
  • Experience overseeing budgets and contracts
  • Interpersonal skills: You use your robust communication skills to work well in teams and are able to respond to public and stakeholder inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Intellectually curious: You are driven to learn and can quickly develop an understanding of healthcare trends, issues that beset the addiction medicine field, and ASAM projects.
