Solicitation of Candidates for Co-Editor

Journal of Addiction Medicine

The official journal of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Journal of Addiction Medicine (JAM), seeks a new Co-Editor to join the editorial team. Candidates must be at the MD and/or Ph.D. level with substantial knowledge of current practice, policy, and research methods and issues in addiction medicine.

Published six times per year, JAM’s mission is to promote excellence in the clinical practice of addiction medicine and addiction clinical research. It is designed for all physicians and other professionals who need to keep up-to-date with the treatment of addiction and co-occurring conditions.

The Co-Editor will contribute to the vision, energy, and leadership of the Editor-in-Chief and other Co-Editors to support JAM as a leading professional clinical journal. The Co-Editor’s responsibilities include managing the peer review process, and, in concert with the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Editors, appointing and directing the activities of the editorial board and peer-reviewers. The Co-Editor also participates in developing policies that will ensure the quality and integrity of the Journal and its related products, promotes JAM and ASAM, and builds partnerships and strategies that are needed for new ventures.

Position Purpose (why the position exists)

The Co-Editor will contribute to the vision, energy, and leadership of the Editor-in-Chief and other Co-Editors to support JAM as a leading professional clinical journal. The Co-Editor’s responsibilities include managing the peer review process, and, in concert with the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Editors, appointing and directing the activities of the editorial board and peer-reviewers. The Co-Editor also participates in developing policies that will ensure the quality and integrity of the Journal and its related products, promote JAM and ASAM, and build partnerships and strategies that are needed for new ventures.


Major Activities (brief overview of major activities)

  • Direct, develop, and enhance a market-focused editorial program soliciting and publishing peer-reviewed articles on current key topics written by top authors and authorities. This includes special attention towards conceptualizing Reviews and Commentaries on high-impact issues and then soliciting capable and peer-respected authors.

  • Represent and promote JAM externally, increasing awareness of and participation in the journal from physicians at all levels of practice and promoting it to broader health care and public audiences.

  • Oversee the peer-review process, focusing on increasing the quality of accepted articles. This includes synthesizing reviewer and editor comments and communicating them with authors, seeking revisions, and participating in the final manuscript decision.

  • Assist the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Editors in appointing and directing the activities of the editorial board and peer-reviewers.

  • Collaborate with and advise ASAM and Publisher on advertising sales and circulation to maintain and increase the journal’s competitive position. Participate in short-term and long-term planning.

  • Participate in a weekly call with the Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor, and Co-Editors, attend the annual editorial board meeting, be open to participating in an annual publishing workshop at a national meeting when feasible, and work with editors-in-training (e.g., Editorial Fellow)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Education: Required - Doctor prepared at the MD/Ph.D. level with substantial knowledge of current practice, policy, and research methods and issues in addiction medicine.
  • Experience: Required - Minimum 10 years of practice experience. Demonstrate an understanding of the clinical relevance of research.
  • Specialized Skills/Abilities: Required - Ability to critically review original addiction research. Experience writing/earning grant-funded research, presenting original research at professional meetings, and a substantial record of peer-reviewed publications. Demonstrate the ability to recruit authors of original addiction research to submit high-quality, high-impact research manuscripts to JAM. Expertise in clinical trials research is desirable but not required. Editorial experience is also strongly preferred but not required.
  • Leadership Skills/Abilities: Required - Strong leadership and communication skills, including writing, presentation skills, and public speaking.
  • Specialized Licenses or Certifications: Required - A doctorate degree is required. A current MD/DO license is preferred (required if a physician).
  • Addiction Field Professional Engagement: Preferred - Membership with the American Society of Addiction Medicine preferred.

  • Strategic Planning: In concert with the other Co-Editors, works with ASAM and publisher to develop the strategic plan for ensuring the success of journal, including positioning within addiction medicine, broader healthcare, and public markets. Creates the vision; collaborates on the development, implementation, and evaluation of the plan.

  • Business Planning (Sales, Product, Project, etc.): In concert with the other Co-Editors, sets the editorial agenda and priorities for the journal; makes decisions about editorial lineups for regular issues; defines editorial policies and sets publishing standards, including ethical standards; makes decisions about manuscripts submitted for publication; appoints editorial board, contributing editors, and peer reviewers; determines external priorities and opportunities re: increasing the visibility of the journal in practice and educational and professional organizational arenas. Identifies opportunities for special projects and revenue-generating opportunities that are consistent with the vision for the journal.
