Position Title: Coordinator, Advocacy and Government Relations

Reports To: Senior Manager, Private Sector Relations

Status: Non-exempt

Position Summary:

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) is a medical professional society of over 6,000 members with 40 staff and a $10M annual operating budget. It is an energetic, fast-paced organization with multi-faceted opportunities in addiction medicine.

The Advocacy and Government Relations Coordinator is a full-time position that reports to the Senior Manager, Private Sector Relations, and provides administrative and advocacy support for the Advocacy and Government Relations Department. Candidates must have an appetite and ability to learn quickly on the job and develop an understanding of the support and other needs related to ASAM’s advocacy and government relations initiatives.


  • Prepares drafts of regulatory comment letters, legislative letters of support or opposition, and other correspondence to support state and private sector advocacy initiatives
  • Performs research on a variety of addiction medicine-related topics, and maintains a database of relevant peer-reviewed studies and scientific publications that assist the Advocacy and Government Relations Department with advancing the field of addiction medicine
  • Provides support to ASAM’s relevant advocacy and government relations committees and councils through the preparation of correspondence, member engagement, and committee records maintenance
  • Assists in the preparation of advocacy toolkits
  • Coordinates schedules and logistics of internal and external meetings
  • Works with ASAM’s internal and external communication, marketing, and public relations partners to communicate advocacy and policy updates to members and the public
  • Assists with budget tracking
  • Provides phone support to members
  • Assists in regular maintenance and coordination of materials and information to be posted to the ASAM website
  • Assists with the accurate management of records (hard copy and electronic files) for all activities, including tracking legislative and regulatory changes through digital advocacy platforms
  • Other special projects as assigned

  • Senior Manager, Private Sector Relations, and Manager, State Advocacy and Government Relations
  • Various Committees, Writing Groups and Task Forces
  • Internal and external communication and public relations partners
  • Membership and Chapter Relations Staff
  • ASAM Members
  • Addiction medicine-related agencies and organizations
  • Third-party payers and other private sector groups

Education and Experience:

  • 1-2 years’ direct experience working, interning, or volunteering with a health advocacy organization, federal or state legislature or agency preferred but not required
  • Association experience a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree required, policy or health-related field preferred

Skills and Abilities:

  • Efficiently handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail and deadlines
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to interact effectively, efficiently and professionally with individuals at all levels of the organization and external partners
  • Excellent written, organizational, and communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Good customer / member service skills
  • Resourcefulness when approaching tasks and projects, as well as thoughtfulness in strategy discussions with advocacy team
  • Team player with positive attitude, enthusiastic energy and ability to have fun with team members
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and/or CSS or experience with a website content management system (CMS) a plus

Recruiting Salary Range: $41,000 - $43,000 (with a robust benefits package)
