Clinical Technical Support Services

Purpose of the RFP:
The purpose of this Request for Proposal (RFP) is to identify and select a contractor to provide Clinical Technical Support services on behalf of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) to support a national standard implementation of The ASAM Criteria, by being trained to assist in multiple aspects of development and technical support for ASAM's software product line, CONTINUUM™.

ASAM is a medical professional society of over 5,000 members with a total staff of 35+ and a $10M annual operating budget. It is an energetic, fast-paced organization with multi-faceted opportunities in addiction medicine.

Its evidence-based ASAM Criteria and related tools have steadily gained widespread adoption for improving addiction patient assessment, treatment and reimbursement. (For information, see: asamCriteria.org; asamCONTINUUM.org)

Proposed Scope of Work:
The Clinical Technical Support Contractor will be trained to a high-level of expertise to assist in multiple aspects of development and technical support for ASAM’s software product line, CONTINUUM. Requests for this clinical support will come from ASAM’s website, from conference exhibit booth traffic, and from ASAM’s prime technical partner, FEi Systems (which is responsible for coordinating technical support for technically-oriented questions, in parallel fashion).

The contractor will provide services on behalf of and report to ASAM. Training and oversight will be provided by the ASAM CONTINUUM Chief Architect, David R. Gastfriend, MD, DFASAM, with consultative support from the Editor-in-Chief of the ASAM Criteria, David Mee-Lee, MD, FASAM. The work may include opportunities for research, evaluation, and policy involvement.

The contract will require approximately 8 hours of time per week, billed on an hourly basis. The work will be performed on a flex-schedule, during East Coast business hours, Monday-Friday. The contractor is required to have a 20 Mb/s or faster internet access and a high-quality computer.

Specific tasks for the contractor will include:
  • Provide first-line technical support to treatment programs, managed care entities, counties and states that have clinical questions regarding the use of the ASAM Criteria, and the ASAM-endorsed set of software tools.
  • Reply to clinical inquiries with written email responses and, when needed, telephone responses
  • Participate in the development and quality improvement process with the internal ASAM team and its technical service vendor(s)
  • Provide training to customers and potential customers
  • Support the full range of ASAM-endorsed tools, including: CONTINUUM, CO-Triage™, the CONTINUUM Biopsychosocial Narrative Report Generator and Problem List, and related products that continue to be developed.
Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities:
The ideal contractor will possess the following:
  • Doctoral degree in clinical psychology with post-doctoral fellowship training in clinical research or an equivalent combination of credentials and experience.
  • Experience in software programming and/or statistics (desirable).
  • Background in addiction treatment and general familiarity with The ASAM Criteria.

  • The engagement will begin when the contractor is selected and is expected to continue for 12 months with renewable 12-month terms.
