Position Title: Manager, Health Technology

Status: Full-time

Position Summary:

This newly created position will support ASAM’s health information technology portfolio, overseeing clinical support for the ASAM CONTINUUM and CO-Triage software tools which provide clinical decision support for determining the appropriate level of treatment for patients with addiction. These tools support implementation of The ASAM Criteria®, the most widely used set of guidelines for treating patients with addiction (For information, see: asamCriteria.org; asamCONTINUUM.org). The ASAM CONTINUUM Criteria Decision Engine provides clinicians with a computer-guided, structured interview process that organizes treatment priorities and recommends the least intensive, safe, effective treatment setting. CONTINUUM expands patient access to coordinated, comprehensive care, improves diagnostic accuracy, accelerates effective treatment, and simplifies reporting to insurance carriers. Use of the system is already growing rapidly and is expected to quadruple over the next several years.

The manager for Health Technology will report to the Director for Health Information Technology and will oversee development and implementation of clinical support and training programs for CONTINUUM end users. The selected candidate will monitor customer issues and needs and facilitate solutions to improve training and support clinical implementation. They will work with ASAM’s Quality Improvement Council to develop and implement strategies to support end user clinical support training with both in person events, expert consulting services, clinical help-desk services and e-learning modules.

The manager for Health Technology will work closely with strategic partners including ASAM’s primary technical partner, FEI Systems, ASAM experts including ASAM CONTINUUM’s Chief Architect, the Editor-in-Chief of the ASAM Criteria, ASAM’s Quality Improvement Council, and other ASAM staff.

ASAM is a medical professional society of over 6,000 members with a total staff of 40+ and a $10M annual operating budget. It is an energetic, fast-paced organization with multi-faceted opportunities in addiction medicine. Its evidence-based ASAM Criteria and related tools have steadily gained widespread adoption for improving addiction patient assessment, treatment and reimbursement.

The hours of the full-time position will be defined on a flex-schedule, during East Coast (Rockville, MD). business hours, Monday-Friday.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the full range of ASAM-endorsed tools, including: CONTINUUM, CO-Triage™, and related products that continue to be developed.
  • Coordinate with ASAM experts, FEI Systems, and other stakeholders to identify and prioritize end user clinical support and training needs to ensure the success of CONTINUUM and CO-Triage.
  • Provide training to customers and potential customers, nationwide, both remotely and occasionally, in person
  • Provide first-line technical assistance to treatment programs, managed care entities, counties and states that have clinical questions regarding the use of the ASAM Criteria, and the ASAM-endorsed set of software tools inquiries with written email responses and, when needed, telephone responses.
  • Engage with ASAM’s Quality Improvement Council on the strategy for CONTINUUM clinical support and training
  • Oversee the development and implementation of processes for engaging end users to identify priorities for clinical support and training

Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or directly related field; at least 2 years of experience with addiction treatment. Certification/Licensure LPCC, LPC, LMHC, LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent level
  • General familiarity with The ASAM Criteria preferred.
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Managerial experience preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree or some college preferred
