Position Title: Chief Quality and Policy Officer

Reports To: Executive Vice President/CEO

Status: Exempt

Position Summary:

ASAM is a medical professional society of over 5,000 members with a total staff of 35+ and a $10M annual operating budget. It is an energetic, fast-paced organization with multi-faceted opportunities in addiction medicine.

This senior level position provides strategic oversight and leadership of ASAM’ quality, science and advocacy efforts to enhance ASAM’s visibility in, and contribution to, national policy efforts, and serves as a national spokesperson and leader. The individual in this position is a member of the senior executive team and helps to advance continuous improvement and innovation in support of ASAM’s strategic initiatives.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and oversight for the quality, science (including scientific publishing), advocacy and government relations departments, to advance the strategic priorities set by the Board of Directors.
  • Provide strategic guidance to department directors, Executive Vice President/CEO and senior leadership team to build, maintain and advance relationships with external stakeholders, governmental and non-governmental groups, think tanks, and peer organizations to support collaborative initiatives and organizational priorities.
  • Provide oversight and support to the department directors and their staff to develop and implement strategies to advance quality, science (including scientific publishing) and advocacy priorities.
  • Serve as a spokesperson with external audiences.
  • Provide strategic guidance to the department directors and their staff to negotiate business contracts with partners and vendors.
  • Provide leadership to identify, prepare and oversee administration of grants and contracts from diverse sources to fund departmental activities.
  • Remain current and knowledgeable on legislation and regulation pertaining to addiction medicine practice and quality improvement (e.g., guidelines, performance measures), as well as major trends in healthcare delivery, reimbursement, quality improvement, research, scientific publishing, and other issues relevant to addiction medicine policy and clinical practice.
Other Duties:
  • Attend Board and Executive Council Meetings.
  • Serve on the executive leadership team, ensuring that ASAM’s internal and external operations are efficient and effective in advancing the organization’s overall strategic direction.
  • Work with Directors, Members, and Committees across the organization to support ASAM’s mission and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Vice President/CEO.


Works closely with:

  • Director of Advocacy and Government Affairs, Director of Quality and Science, Managers, Quality and Science.
  • CEO, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Learning Officer.

Education and Experience:

  • Masters degree in public health, policy, political science, or related field required
  • Advanced degree in health policy, health services research, or related field, desirable
  • Deep knowledge of the environment of physician reimbursement with an expert understanding of healthcare policy, practice policy, practice management, and/or clinical quality
  • Expertise and experience in the legislative and regulatory process
  • Minimum of ten years of professional experience in health policy and government affairs including at least five years of management and supervisory experience
  • Experience with health care association or health care related agency, desirable

  • Excellent oral skills for addressing large meetings, small conferences, and one-on-one encounters
