Opening Plenary Scientific Session: “A New Paradigm Facing America's Drug Use and Addiction Crises”

Friday, April 5, 2019, from 8:30 am – 10:00 am.

We're in crisis, but there's hope. The hope is a new paradigm for preventing and treating drug use and addiction in America. For prevention, we focus on drugs, but the key to prevention is a recognition of why people use them--understanding and mitigating risk factors. For treatment: We're at the beginning of a sea change as we reject failed efforts of the past -- ones based on the view that addiction is a choice -- and replace it with one based on the science of addiction medicine.

A Special Evening with the Father and Son from Beautiful Boy

Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Beautiful Boy, the Amazon Studios movie based on the novels by David and Nic Sheff, has offered the public a powerful view on addiction and the disease’s devastating impact on patients and their families.  Hear first-hand from father and son, David and Nic Sheff, about their personal journey of addiction and recovery, which still provides hope to many across the country today. The session will include poignant clips shown from the movie with live commentary and personal reflections from the Sheffs. Marc Fishman, MD, DFASAM, an addiction medicine specialist with expertise in treating adolescents with addiction, will moderate this timely conversation.

“ASAM is proud to have David and Nic Sheff presenting their highly respected perspectives at the 50th ASAM Annual Conference.” said Kelly J. Clark, MD, MBA, DFAPA, DFASAM, president of ASAM. “Beautiful Boy embraces the love that drives families dealing with this disease and reflects the truth that addiction is a chronic brain disease, not a moral failure. For the millions of families struggling with this terrible brain disease, Beautiful Boy shows that while love might not conquer disease, the presence of disease should never be considered a lack of love.”

David and Nic Sheff will also participate in a special book signing on site at the conference on Friday, April 5th from 12:15 pm - 1:00 pm.
