ACAAM Specialty Showcase | May 7, 3 pm EDT

As part of our mission and dedication to help grow the addiction medicine workforce, the American College of Academic Addiction Medicine (ACAAM) will be hosting a virtual Specialty Showcase for medical students, residents, or practicing physicians.

ACAAM encourages its members to distribute promotional information to the residencies at their institutions, as well as affiliated medical schools, to help spread the word about this new event. We ask that you share this flyer with your institution’s residency programs and medical students to attend the event.

Find a Fellowship

With fellowships available across the country, addiction medicine offers a wide range of training and career options. Please use the ACAAM virtual fellowship opportunities map (below) to explore your options for programs participating in the NRMP Match. For a complete roster of all addiction medicine fellowship training programs, including programs not participating in the Match, visit acgme.org.

  • Addiction medicine fellowships by the numbers
  • Clinical fellowships are available for physicians who have completed residency training in any of the 24 primary specialties. The 12-month programs produce clinical experts, faculty, researchers, and change agents.
  • 102 addiction medicine fellowships are currently accredited by ACGME.
  • Fellowship graduates are eligible to take the addiction medicine certification exam by the American Board of Preventive Medicine or the American Osteopathic Association. While qualified physicians may currently seek certification on the basis of practice experience, fellowship training is recognized as the highest level of preparation. Learn more.
  • Most fellowships follow a July-June academic calendar, but many also offer part-time and off-cycle training. Salary and benefits are typically at the PGY-4 level.
  • Fellowship graduates practice in a variety of settings ranging from specialized addiction care to general medicine and public health settings. Their skills and expertise are increasingly sought by health systems, academic institutions, hospitals, medical groups, and public health. This demand is driven by recognition that addiction is a complex chronic disease that is both costly and challenging. Evidence-based approaches are now advancing at a rapid pace, but there is a shortage of experts to apply them and provide preventive interventions, treatment, consultation and teaching.
  • Fellowships follow core standards but offer diverse options. Training occurs in general ambulatory settings, outpatient addiction programs, inpatient addiction facilities, hospital medical-surgical units, consult services, and health system and public health settings. Experience is emphasized in longitudinal care, interdisciplinary teams, and prevention as well as comprehensive treatment in multiple modalities. Fellows work with patients across the lifespan who are demographically diverse and represent a broad range of addiction pathology.

Candidates can use the fellowship map, below, to help guide their search for the right program. Clicking on a program icon will bring up some key information, including whether the fellowship has an opening(s) for the 2024-2025 appointment year. The map includes training programs that participated in the NRMP Match.

You can open the map to a larger window by clicking the box-frame icon at upper right. This allows you to quickly identify the programs with openings, and it can also show programs by their departmental affiliation.

Because addiction medicine is a multispecialty subspecialty, fellowships are affiliated with various departments/residencies. While most are affiliated with family medicine, internal medicine or psychiatry, some are affiliated with emergency medicine or pediatrics. The degree of the affiliation varies – some program directors are from a different specialty than the host department (PD specialty is shown when you click on a fellowship).

Some programs may have specific eligibility criteria or preferences, but overall, the distinguishing feature of addiction medicine fellowships is that they are open to physicians of all specialties. Of note – although a number of fellowships are based in psychiatry departments, most of their fellows have been non-psychiatrists.
