John G. Symeonides, MD, FASAM, FAAFP, CMD, is President of the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine (FSAM), Board member of the Florida Medical Professionals Group, former FSAM Public Policy Committee Chairman, Flagler County Drug Court Team Physician, Flagler County Opioid Task Force, and Florida Medical Association Delegate.
Dr. Symeonides is the Medical Director of Journey to Independence Recovery Center in Palm Coast, Florida and has practiced medicine in Florida since 2001. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Addiction Medicine, Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and Sleep Medicine, Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and a Certified Medical Director.

1. What have been your greatest contributions to ASAM or to the field of addiction medicine over the last 10 years?
I have been honored to have advocated for ASAM resolutions at the state level in Florida by serving as delegate to the Florida Medical Society, participating in the FMA Specialty Society meetings, organizing and moderating a panel to educate on Drug Courts at the FMA Annual meeting, promoting the ASAM criteria for admission to the FMA and Florida legislature.
2. How would your election to the ASAM Board of Directors benefit ASAM and the field of addiction medicine?
I aspire to advocate for access to medical care for those with SUD in all settings and to work to ensure adequate insurance reimbursement for treatment, advocate for grants, increased research and improvement of standards of care.
