Opioid addiction is a chronic, life-threatening disease with significant medical, emotional, criminal justice and societal costs.

Medications to treat addiction involving opioid use are both clinical and cost-effective interventions.

ASAM’s National Practice Guideline is the first to include in a single document all the FDA-approved medications available to treat addiction involving opioid use and overdose.

The ASAM National Practice Guideline for the Use of Medications in the Treatment of Addiction Involving Opioid Use and its associated resources, including pocket guide and app, article in the Journal of Addiction Medicine, slide deck and information about upcoming webinars is available at www.ASAMNationalGuideline.com.

ASAM encourages policymakers and payers to use this guideline to support evidence-based coverage standards for medications that treat opioid use disorders and prevent overdose deaths.

The National Practice Guideline for the Use of Medications in the Treatment of Addiction Involving Opioid Use was developed to promote evidence-based clinical treatment of opioid use disorder and to assist physicians in the decision-making process for prescribing pharmacotherapies to patients with opioid use disorder.
