NIH Director Announces NIDA and NIAAA Will Not Merge

NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins announces that the planned reorganization of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) will not happen. Rather, NIH will pursue a plan of functional integration to optimize NIH research in the areas of substance use and addiction. NIDA and NIAAA will retain their institutional identities while strengthening their ongoing efforts to work more closely with each other and with related research programs at other institutes and centers.
