CSAM Sponsored Physician Health Program Legislation Passed by CA Senate

June 15, 2012
California Society of Addiction Medicine’s (CSAM) sponsored legislation to create a statewide Physician Health Program was passed by the California State Senate by a vote of 36 to two. The legislation is being carried by the Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, a democrat from Sacramento.

After the demise of the CA Physician Diversion Program, CSAM joined together with other CA medical associations to form the “CA Public Protection and Physician Health” (CPPPH), a non-profit organization. The organizations supporting CPPPH set out to pass legislation that would mandate a new statewide program to support physicians who face medical, substance use, psychological, behavioral and/or emotional issues. Left unaddressed, such conditions could impact physicians’ ability to deliver safe patient care.
