Review Course in Addiction Medicine

The ASAM Review Course in Addiction Medicine is designed to provide an up-to-date review of the core content of Addiction Medicine. It is appropriate for multiple audiences, including:

• Physicians who are planning to sit for the Certification/Recertification Examination in Addiction Medicine will find the course a highly effective adjunct to their preparations for the exam.
• Addiction specialists will find the Review Course a useful "refresher" because of its clinical orientation and focus on recent developments in addiction science and practice.
• Non-specialist physicians and other health care professionals will find in the course a succinct summary of the knowledge needed to identify and manage problems related to alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, which studies show are present in one of every 10 patients seen in primary care settings.

Individuals who complete the Review Course should be able to demonstrate knowledge of current clinical practice across the spectrum of Addiction Medicine, as evidenced by their ability to:

• Describe the effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in both tolerant and non-tolerant individuals;
• Describe the process for diagnosing addiction and differentiating the symptoms of addiction from those of other medical or psychiatric disorders;
• Explain the various pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments for addictive disorders, and describe the factors that should be considered in selecting a treatment modality to match a particular patient's needs;
• Describe the precipitants of relapse and current evidence-based practices to prevent and manage relapse.

• Epidemiology of and risk factors for substance use disorders
• The neurobiology of addiction
• Pharmacology of commonly abused drugs
• Screening and brief intervention
• Choosing and using pharmacotherapies
• Behavioral therapies as part of an integrated approach to treatment
• Twelve Step programs as part of the treatment plan
• Managing co-occurring psychiatric disorders
• Medical conditions and complications, including management of the addicted pregnant woman.

Plus Special Sessions on:
What to Expect of the Certification Exam: Test developers and recent examinees will explain how questions are developed, administered and scored; what to expect the day of the exam; and how to prepare.

Assessment Tools and the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria: Developers of the ASAM Criteria and the new Supplement on Pharmacotherapies for Alcohol Use Disorders will discuss use of the Criteria to organize treatment services, as well as to facilitate billing and payment.

Prescribing for Pain/Challenges in Pain Management: The emerging consensus on management of pain, particularly in patients at risk for or recovering from a substance use disorder, and how addiction specialists can help their primary care colleagues improve the care of all patients suffering from pain while minimizing the risk of addiction.

Physician Impairment and Recovery: Experts will explain how physician health programs operate and what the experience of recovering physicians teaches us about the nature of addiction, its treatment and recovery.

ASAM's textbook, Principles of Addiction Medicine, Fourth Edition, is the basic reference text for the Review Course. Speakers will refer to and draw from this text often as part of their presentations. Copies also will be available for purchase at the Review Course.

As a supplement to Principles, participants will receive a Syllabus in print format and access to an electronic PDF syllabus before the course.

Attendees receive access to the Interactive Exam Preparation (IEP) before the course at no extra cost.  The IEP is designed to help prepare for certification/recertification examination in an interactive and engaging format. This internet-based learning tool includes study material and competency test questions for the examinee along with the following features:

• allows individuals a more sustained access to the training material for the exam
• allow users to bookmark pages, highlight text, and take notes about key points for future reference as well as mark sections complete so you can focus your study time appropriately
• can be accessed through supported mobile devices and tablets
