Focus Sessions

Focus Sessions are concentrated presentations of clinical or scientific material designed to give learners an in-depth understanding of a specific topic.  Suggestions include diagnostic approaches and specialized treatment areas, or translating research findings into practical clinical terms.  While typically presented in a structured didactic format, creative teaching methods are also encouraged and presenters should be sure to include time for questions.

Length – All focus sessions are 60 minutes in length.

Process – Focus Session abstracts are submitted and selected through the online abstract process.

Room Setup – The Audio Visual (AV) set-up for each room will include the following: (1) LCD Projector with Screen, (1) Laptop [PC], (1) Podium Mic and (2) Headtable Table Mics. Rooms will be set either rounds/banquet, classroom or theater style.  Assignments will be based on popularity and what rooms are available.


Workshop Sessions

Workshops offer an interactive format that deal with topics and issues best handled informally in give-and-take sessions of small groups. Workshops offer participants an opportunity for hands-on experience, utilizing cases and viewing of demonstrations, with an emphasis on audience participation in discussions, skill-building exercise, etc.  Workshops should include the development of special skills, particular diagnostic or treatment problems, or other issues requiring the active exchange of ideas.

Length – Workshops are either 60 or 90 minutes in length. Workshops submitted via the Call for Abstracts process should plan for a session 60 minutes in length.

Process – Workshop abstracts are mainly submitted and selected through the online abstract process.

Room Setup – The Audio Visual (AV) set-up for each room will include the following: (1) LCD Projector with Screen, (1) Laptop [PC], (1) Podium Mic and (2) Headtable Table Mics. To promote an interactive atmosphere for both audience and presenters, most workshop session rooms will be set in rounds/banquet style.


Poster Presentations

Poster Presentations offer an opportunity to share research interests and ideas. Presenters are required to prepare physical and electronic posters, set them up and attend their poster during a designated times.  ASAM encourages everyone and especially young investigators to submit abstracts for posters.

Length/Size – It is preferred that all Poster Presentations are set up and viewed during the entire conference. The size should not exceed 3 feet 10.5 inches high 7 feet 10.5 inches wide.

Process – Poster Presentation abstracts are submitted and selected through online abstract process.  Posters are open during the conference.

Presenters should also plan to sit by their poster on Friday, April 24th from 12:00 – 2:30 p.m and Saturday, April 25th from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m..  During this time attendees are encouraged to view the posters.  More details will be sent to people with accepted abstracts in November.


Symposium Sessions

Symposium presentations are special sessions developed by invited experts in the field of addiction medicine and the Annual Conference Program Committee, including specialized presentations presented by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  

Length – All symposiums are 90 minutes in length.

Process - Symposiums are not selected through the online abstract process and are pre-approved by the Annual Conference Program Committee. Approved symposiums must submit their details, including all presenters, via the Call for Abstract system.
