Become Certified

The ASAM certificate is recognized throughout the world as signifying excellence in the practice of Addiction Medicine. It demonstrates that a doctor has met vigorous standards through intensive study, assessment, and evaluation. Certification is designed to assure the public that a medical specialist has successfully completed an approved educational program and an evaluation, including a secure examination designed to assess the knowledge, experience, and skills requisite to the provision of high quality patient care.

The next Certification Exam will be offered by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, ABAM, on December 11, 2010. The 2010 Certification Application will be posted by October 2009 on both this website and on ABAM’s website at www.abam.net . The eligibility criteria for the exam and the exam fees and deadlines are linked below.

ReCertification

If a physician was certified prior to 1998, recertification is not required but may be done voluntarily. Physicians certified in 1998 or later must recertify every ten years to remain certified in Addiction Medicine by ABAM.

Computer Testing in 2008

Computer Testing for the December 6, 2008 Certification and Recertification Exam will take place at over 400 Prometric Test Centers Nationally and Internationally. [Computer Testing Policies and Procedures 2008]

The ASAM Board of Directors approved a plan to seek specialty recognition of Addiction Medicine.
