Legislative Day

Thank you to those who participated in ASAM's 2015 Legislative Day! As a result of your advocacy, we have been able to draw attention to the disease of addiction from legislators and the public alike.

Since 2016 is an election year, we will not be holding a Legislative Day until next year. Please check back here for information on ASAM's 2017 Legislative Day!

On Monday, October 5th, 2015, ASAM hosted its 10th Legislative Day on Capitol Hill. Legislative Day is an opportunity for ASAM members to meet with their Congressional representatives to discuss ASAM's priorities, share concerns and offer their expertise on issues related to drug and addiction treatment.

The 2015 Legislative Day was coordinated with the campaign Facing Addiction. Facing Addiction is a grassroots mobilization of individuals, communities and organizations coming together to face addiction and stand up for recovery. On Sunday, October 4th, Facing Addiction hosted a rally called UNITE to Face Addiction on the National Mall to voice support for solutions to addiction and the harms of alcohol and other drug use that are based on science and compassion, not stigma and shame.

That following Monday, Facing Addiction and ASAM joined forces for an advocacy day on Capitol Hill to let our nation's leaders know that addiction is preventable and treatable, that far too many of those affected are incarcerated and that people do recover. Over 500 volunteers from Facing Addiction and two dozen ASAM members participated, resulting in numerous House and Senate members signing on to legislation to address addiction.
