Public Policy Statement on Mandatory Insurance Coverage

Whereas: 

1. Alcoholism and other drug dependencies are major public health problems;
  
2. These illnesses, untreated, account for significant human and financial cost;
  
3. Individuals affected by these illnesses have the need for varying intensities of service;


ASAM endorses the concept of mandatory insurance coverage for alcoholism and other drug dependencies which:

a. Provides for adequate outpatient and inpatient treatment;

b. Allows the subscriber free choice of physician;
   
c. Does not discriminate these illnesses from other medical conditions.
