Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How should I study for the Examination? One should take the ASAM Review Course in Addiction Medicine and Study using Principles of Addiction Medicine, third Edition. You can order Principles of Addivtion Medicine by calling our publication distribution center at 1-800-844-8948. Also see our web page on [How to Prepare for the ASAM Exam]

Where can I find additional CME? Take a look at our web page listing online CME and additional resources. Many of the CME listed here are free. [Additional CME]

Are there Sample Questions? If you attend the ASAM review Course in Addiction Medicine, you will automatically receive the Review Course CD Rom, and on that CD Rom you will find approximtely 250 sample questions.

How can I verify a Physician is Certified?  All you need to do is search for the physician by last name in our membership directory, and it will let you know. [Verification of Certification]

Does ASAM certification expire? Yes, ASAM Certification is valid for 10 years, and will expire, unless you were certified in 1996 or in any year prior to 1996, then your certification does not expire, and you are not required to the take the ASAM Examination in order to maintain your certified status.

How long is the ASAM Exam? The exam is rougly 7 hours long. There are roughly two hundred questions for each part of the exam.

I lost my Orange Scheduling Permit to the exam, where can I get another permit to the Exam? You should contact Christopher Weirs at cweir@asam.org , and he will Fed Ex one to you.

How do I get a Replacement Certificate? contact Christopher Weirs at cweir@asam.org. There is no charge for an additional certificate or for replacement of your certificate. It will however, take approximately 3-4 weeks for the calligraphy to be done and for you to receive your certificate.

Where can I get Addiction Medicine Training? You can meet the one year FTE requirement using experience from your practice, or you can take an Addiction Medicine Fellowship. Here is a listing of all ADM Fellowships: [Fellowships in Addiction Medicine]

Computer Testing in 2008

Computer Testing for the December 6, 2008 Certification and Recertification Exam will take place at over 400 Prometric Test Centers Nationally and Internationally. [Computer Testing Policies and Procedures 2008]
The ASAM Board of Directors approved a plan to seek specialty recognition of Addiction Medicine.

This issue of ASAM News features a special report to the ASAM membership describing the MSAG’s findings and recommendations, and outlining the proposed path toward specialty recognition for Addiction Medicine that has been approved by ASAM’s Board. [April 2008 Update][April 2007 News]
